Timekeeping in Construction

Jonathan Matson

Timekeeping apps sound great in theory, but when it comes to the construction industry, they’re a whole different beast to implement. The office folks don’t always get it—tracking time in a nice, climate-controlled building is one thing, but out here on a job site, it’s a whole different story. You’ve got guys spread out over multiple locations, working odd hours, sometimes with no reliable cell service. Expecting everyone to clock in and out on their phones like they’re working a desk job just isn’t realistic.

Then there’s the human side of it. A lot of seasoned workers aren’t exactly tech-savvy, and they don’t want to mess around with an app when they’ve got tools in their hands. If the system isn’t dead simple, they either won’t use it or they’ll punch in wrong, creating more headaches than it solves. Plus, construction moves fast—crews shift, tasks change, and sometimes a guy gets pulled onto another job halfway through the day. If the app can’t keep up with that kind of flexibility, it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

And let’s not forget payroll. A lot of timekeeping apps are built for standard 9-to-5 jobs, not an industry where overtime, travel time, and different pay rates are the norm. If the system can’t handle all that without a bunch of manual adjustments, it’s just making more work for the office. Bottom line—if a timekeeping app isn’t built with construction in mind, it’s not going to last long out here. That is why we created Crew Console.
